CHARACTER INFORMATION

NAME: Emily Dyer
CANON: Identity V - [community profile] slumscape CRAU
CANON REFERENCE: History | Original time in the manor.

Identity V is set in Eurydice Manor, a mysterious location where select people are invited to come and take part in a "game" hosted by the Baron in order to obtain the prize of their dearest wish. It is, in truth, nothing more than a testing ground for a murderous game of chase, where a chosen hunter pursues four survivors as they attempt to solve puzzles and unlock the gates before they are cornered and caught. However, the manor seems to exist in its own section of reality, for no matter the outcome - killed, escaped, trapped - every soul always finds themselves back at the manor, their death wounds healed. The cycle persists with different hunters and survivors, and diaries exist to record different sets of games and circumstances surrounding them. Though newcomers may join, no one has yet gotten out, only vanished from the outside world.

CANON POINT: A while after entering the manor's game, after Ganji Gupta joins the group of the survivors.

CRAU HISTORY:

Emily was pulled into the city of Hakagemachi, possessed by a daitengu spirit going by the name of Hibiki, her life and theirs tied to a mysterious mask. While she was uncertain how to proceed or what to do with the voice in her head, the spirit seemed beneficial enough, guiding her towards carving out a space for her in the city and aiding her in completing various tasks for the residents. Working to purify the city's shrines and save it from falling apart, Emily found herself acting as a combat medic to the more practiced fighters in the city, and ultimately started moving towards regularly offering medical services and care to others, resuming the duties she knew well.

Folding into that, frustrated by her own powerlessness when confronted with the supernatural, Emily approached the Forest Spirit - one of the minor gods of the city - and pleaded with her for aid so that she could do and be more. While this could be done, it came with a price - Hibiki and her would be more fused as souls, blurring more of the lines between them and her. Nevertheless, she accepted, taking power in exchange for their sway over her. Not only did this affect her physically to accommodate them in several ways, but psychologically she was somewhat changed - now the tengu could come forward and speak as they wished, and they had their own agenda.

Still, they found a harmony, and emboldened by her new power, Emily made greater strides. From managing to create a medicine that would lessen the effects of supernatural forces on a mind to growing closer to other possessed, she settled in comfortably to the new normal. Unfortunately, she overstepped her bounds in trying to use her healing powers on the suffering Lake Spirit, and not only failed but nearly died for her efforts. Though she was saved, it was a deep blow to her pride and a reminder to keep her own limitations in mind. Eventually the spirit was healed, but at cost - a number of possessed women came to offer their own lives to free it, Emily among them. Though she was resurrected by its power, the incident would stick with her strongly, and led her to cling more closely to the bonds she had made in the city as well as finally start to hold more of her own ground in tense situations. Even when space and time started to fall apart, Emily remained focused on trying to persevere, to keep herself on the path that gave her security as well as hope for a better future.

AGE: 32, almost 33.
APPEARANCE: Canon art, though the doll look is stylized, and Emily is 100% a human woman. Here are better examples of what she looks like.

Because of voluntarily fusing with a youkai, there are several alterations to her appearance. Most noticeable are the large black wings on her back, but she also has had her nails turn into more of talons, her legs are now black ombre, and she's in possession of a nictitating membrane, though the last doesn't come out much.
CONTRACT PAYMENT: The mental and physical recovery of Emma Woods.

QUESTIONNAIRE:
What are your greatest regrets, if you have any? What would you have done differently?

Emily's greatest regret is quite plain, even though she doesn't talk about it much - it's her having accidentally murdered a woman on her surgery table, being helpless to stop the excessive bleeding. If she could, she would have gone through everything again, been excessively careful - but then again, none of it would have happened if she hadn't compromised her morals and agreed to perform the illegal surgery in the first place. If she really could change things, knowing what could happen, she would have let her personal clinic fail and fold, which would have driven her either to another job or working for a municipal hospital - at least there, she wouldn't be faced with the same responsibilities.

However, her other greatest regret is not questioning what was happening at the asylum to the children there, and obeying the orders given to her to put them through treatment. Because of that, some people lost their minds, like Emma, while others were likely harmed for no real reason, and Emily carries this with her privately. If allowed to do things differently, she would have taken a harder stance, pushed back more, tried to persuade the nuns that in truth, perhaps there was nothing wrong with the children at all and the treatments were unnecessary.

Your Faction leader, not just your boss but the leader, has asked you to carry out a hit. The target is a non-affiliated public leader, well-liked by the people of the city. Do you carry it out? Why or why not?

Emily would try her best to get out of it, pointing out everything from her own cowardice to her lack of assassination skills, looking for a loophole she could exploit to get the duty off her hands. Ultimately, though, she could be turned to do it were the lives of those she cherishes held in the balance or something equally bad. Her own life would not be a factor, but she would not see them suffer, and it would haunt her deeply to have yet more blood on her hands - she'd do her best to conceal her own involvement. However, lacking prime motivation, she'd rack her brain for a solution that's bloodless in the end.

An enemy of your faction has asked for a meeting, proposing a truce of sorts to deal with a greater threat. On one hand, there is indeed a threat at hand, but on the other, this person double-crossing you is just as likely an outcome. Do you agree to the meeting? Do you trust them?

Emily would agree, but she would find some way to subtly protect herself as she went. The repeated loop of the manor's game has left her wiser to the manipulations of others, but with a greater obstacle at hand, one must sometimes take even a distasteful solution. Her instinct would be to ask a friend to follow her at a careful distance and watch the proceedings - if she was attacked or incapacitated, they could make the call on whether to help her or to run back and warn others as to what happened. Even if the enemy was to claim that she had to come alone, she would claim that she didn't know this person was going to intervene, should she need it.

Teamwork is almost forced into every single survivor of the manor to make any progress in games, useless as it might end up feeling. A victory is a victory, and Emily has gone from needing it to truly mean something to taking gratitude in the smaller things - fleeting happiness is still happiness, and it keeps ennui from settling in. Should this offer to band together end up being sincere, Emily might see if in the future, it could be leveraged. If they cooperate once, why not again? Why not see where this can take them, and what it would offer them both?

You've worked with your Faction awhile now and you feel like the reward of your contract is within reach. But at the last moment, you are told you have even more service to pay beforehand, an obscure clause in the contract being exploited to keep you under your boss's thumb even longer. Your Faction Leader hasn't spoken on this, and might be able to dispute it. Do you go to your leader? Do you argue the dispute yourself? Do you begrudgingly accept the additional work? Something else?

Emily would go to her faction leader, but ultimately not protest the extra work as much as one might. Her own regrets for the past and her feelings that what happened to her is her own fault would ensnare her enough that she would accept the change in fate - it's hell, after all, and however much service she has to pay to undo her own mistakes feels fair. If she could negotiate, her terms would be to get the payment, and then to serve the extra time, for once she has her goal she feels that she could accept her lot in life such as it is. After all, it's not as bad as before - she can tolerate a lot with that in mind.

POWERS & ABILITIES:
canon.
Emily is an ordinary human, but unintentionally trained in evasion and what amounts to mild parkour - she can jump from the second story of a building with only a little stumbling. She is a trained doctor, and versed in compounding natural medicines.

slumscape.
* Short term flight - with her wings, she took time and practice to be able to utilize them effectively. Still takes energy as much as running or any activity might.
* Mild illusion powers - she primarily uses these to conceal her wings on a regular basis. Cannot cast them in an area beyond herself, as she never trained for it. Borrowed from the youkai in her.
* Mask - when putting it on, it shapeshifts her some to be closer to the tengu in her body, and offers some stat bonuses to compensate. Her strength, agility, and speed all go up, and mentally, it is no longer Emily in her body, but the tengu.
* Ability to use bursts and gusts of wind either offensively or to support her - limited strictly to her masked form.
* Healing ability - by focusing her energy, she is able to heal up to a major degree of injury either on herself or someone else. It does not erase the injury itself, but instead is closer to advanced regeneration and repair. It does come with an energy cost from Emily herself, so she has to be in a fit state to use it or else it will fail or not even begin.
* Instinct - allied closely with the spirit in her, she's able to share some in their ability to navigate forest areas and discern between helpful and harmful plants.

depowering.
To accommodate the level playing field in Jigoku-cho, any of her acquired powers will be heavily nerfed, weakened to the point of futility. No shapeshifting, no healing, no borrowing the spirit's powers - all that will have to be earned back. The most that putting on the mask will do will be to affect her psychologically and offer a quick road for the tengu to speak through.

SUITABILITY: Emily in her life has been caught in a violent cycle of death. Hell, to her, cannot be worse than the endless loop of the manor's games, and would be something she believed she utterly earned. Beyond that, she has already had her morals shift around even before then - sacrificing her professional standards to achieve stability, even as it came with high risk of being branded a criminal at best, a murderer at worst, and she caught glimpses of the less sanitized version of life all the while.

FACTION SUITABILITY:

shuten clan - While her way of life doesn't rely on physical strength, Emily would understand and relate to the culture of one's willpower being a marker in their own destiny. To survive and succeed, she personally has had to push forward and remain resolute, regardless of where her values of good and bad lie on the way, and it actually worked out for a time. Additionally, though she can't say that she's not a liar (for she definitely is in terms of deflecting personal questions), she very much agrees with responsibility to others, and tries to pursue it.

tamamo clan - The foxes' value of insight and looking ahead aligns well with Emily - she's noted to be "extremely clever", and while the idea of pleasure seems to be at odds at the least separate from her values, her kindness and self sacrificing desire to aid others fits neatly in the concept of giving people the best of what there is. One can't enjoy themselves if they're hurting, after all - it's easier done if that's all tended to. While she can't agree that freedom involves fully seeking relief from stress and that as the end goal, she is someone who very much understands the pain that being trapped can cause that exceeds death as punishment.

sutoku alliance - Knowledge over others is something a doctor can garner in spades, if she's less tied to her morals. Over the course of her work, Emily is privy to a number of secrets, and generally keeps her eyes and ears open to what is going on in the world to stay prepared and informed. Not to mention, the human society she came from was very dependent on reputation and connections - it would simply be a more extreme version of home, to sink herself there, and to play the game of influence again. She understands the idea of power in the hands of those smart enough to manage, though isn't quite sure how one decides who's best suited to do so apart from those being raised to the task like aristocrats and career politicians.

enma department - Emily's strongest wish in life, and the one she's been denied, is stability, and the idea of order is exactly where she'd drift if she had a personal choice so that she could pursue that. While she hasn't the fortitude for keeping the law herself or truly aligning with a city, and is still carrying the guilt around for breaking her own oaths for personal gain, she's at a point where she wants to try, try again, and has resolved to give of herself to others to amend and atone for what she does, whatever they ask. Personally, she cannot subscribe to pure order in her own mindset, but she does know how to obey it and smother her own doubts.
